This identified opportunity is open to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander applicants. We're looking for a motivated and community-minded individual to join our Environmental Health team as an Aboriginal Cadet Environmental Health Officer.

In this role, you’ll gain hands-on experience and develop the skills needed to become a qualified Environmental Health Officer; all while studying and earning a wage. It’s a unique chance to work on Country, support your community’s wellbeing, and grow professionally with strong guidance and support from our experienced Environmental Health team.

 What You’ll Be Doing

In this cadetship, you’ll be actively involved in all aspects of environmental and public health work. You’ll be learning on the job while contributing to vital services that protect the health and safety of our community.

Some of your responsibilities will include:

  • Assisting with inspections of food businesses, public swimming pools and spas, cooling towers, caravan parks and  skin penetration premises (e.g., beauty salons and tattoo studios).
  • Supporting the team on development applications and environmental assessments.
  • Helping respond to community requests about air, noise, water, contaminated land and waste issues.
  • Participating in health promotion activities and local community events.
  • Learning how to maintain accurate records and write basic reports.
  • Developing your understanding of public health and environmental laws.
  • Supporting our team in delivering great outcomes through exceptional customer service.

What You'll Bring

We’re looking for an enthusiastic and community-minded person who identifies as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander. This is a cadet role, so no previous experience is required, just a genuine interest in health, science, or the environment, along with the motivation to learn and grow. You’ll need to be a good communicator, a reliable team player, and someone who’s organised and comfortable working both indoors and out in the field. Most importantly, you must be eligible for, and committed to, completing a Bachelor of Science (Environmental Health) at Western Sydney University. Your university studies will take place over a 6-year period, with ongoing support and guidance throughout your journey.

Salary: The salary for this cadetship ranges from approximately $31,288 to $53,196 p.a. in accordance with the Local Government (State) Award. Your salary will be determined based on your age, qualifications, and any previous work experience. Superannuation (12%) is additional.

Location: This position will be based at our Administration Centre in Yalawanyi Ganya at 2 Biripi Way, Taree. You may also be required to be based from other Council sites across the MidCoast Council region.

Tenure:

  • 6 year fixed term 
  • Full time 35 hours per week
